Saharanpur Mosque Demolition: Left Parties Protest

Saharanpur Mosque Demolition: Left Parties Protest

CPI(ML) condemns the illegal bulldozing of a 70-year-old mosque in Saharanpur during early hours of September 5th. All left parties jointly organised a state-wide protest against this illegal demolition on September 15th and demanded strict compliance with the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.

Hundreds of madrasas, mosques and mazars in districts along the Nepal border have already been demolished or shut down in the name of regulations. In Rampur, a conspiracy was hatched to demolish Mohammad Ali Jauhar University on technical grounds. The action was temporarily halted following student resistance and a stay order from the Divisional Commissioner, but the threat of bulldozer action against the university remains. The Saharanpur mosque had become a target of the Sangh Brigade, who obtained a City Magistrate's order to carry out the demolition.

Protests were held in Ghazipur, Moradabad, Varanasi, Lucknow, Pilibhit, Behat tehsil in Saharanpur, Nagina and Bijnor. CPI(ML) demands an immediate halt to such bulldozer actions and the restoration of democratic and constitutional rights. The politics of communal hatred and the targeting of minorities must be resisted and defeated.
