UP Police’s Surveillance Dossiers on Left Activists

The Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh has launched a crackdown against activists of Left parties and farmers’ movements, with the state police directing its intelligence wing to prepare detailed surveillance dossiers on political activists across the state before August 20th, and was a direct result of the dog whistle of “dimagi naxals” on Independence Day.

The dossier would contain personal information about activists, including their Aadhaar, PAN and passport details, bank account details, family tree and lineage information, criminal history, occupation, property disputes social media accounts and contacts with administrative officials, among other such details.

These information sheets have been sent to CPI(ML) and other Left activists in Uttar Pradesh, and are being warned against non-compliance. CPI(ML) condemned the political targeting and surveillance as violative of right to privacy, and being against dissent and democracy; and demanded that this action to bring a complete surveillance state be stopped immediately.
